Put on the Belt of Truth

Since the day Adam and Eve ate from the wrong tree the world has thought that truth is relative.  Relative to what we understand and our limited ability to discern good from evil.  Paul tells us to gird ourselves with truth, in fact the NASB version of this verse says that we are to gird our loins with truth.  Several years ago I was teaching on this passage of scripture with our discipleship school students.  I saved this particular piece of armor for the end because, full disclosure, I didn’t know what it meant.  For the record, I don’t recommend teaching on things you don’t know.  As I was saying gird your loins with truth the very next thing that came from my mouth surprised everyone in the room, including myself.  I said for whatever you believe,  you’ll reproduce.  I would love to claim that I had thought that thought and received revelation from God on this but I hadn’t, it just popped out of my mouth.  Truth is not relative, truth is a person named Jesus.  In fact, He said of himself that He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6).  If we believe truth we will reproduce the fruit of believing truth.  Fruit that looks like love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faith and self-control.  Truth is not relative to what I understand, praise the lord!, because my understanding is limited without a relationship with Jesus.  If I believe in my own ability to judge what is right or wrong, I will be limited to my own opinions and judgments.  I think, we need to look at the fruit of what we are believing.  Does what we believe lead to the fruit listed above or does it lead to suspicion, mistrust, judgment, fear, control and all other kinds of negative fruit?  If it does then I’m not believing truth and I’m producing fruit that is rooted in a belief system that is inferior.
