Hebrews 4 — Faith, Rest & Grace
1. Faith Is Our Love Language to God
Promise lands come with giants.
The Promised Land isn't just a destination or something God gives us.
It's learning to trust God in the middle of what feels impossible.
Faith is what allows us to enter God's rest.
2. What Is God’s Rest?
Katapausis — a resting place; a ceasing from work.
Sabbatismos — Sabbath rest; intentional, sacred rest.
God's rest reminds us that the work is finished.
Sabbath is a chance to slow down, look around, and remember what God has done.
It's not primarily about what I'm doing but who I'm with.
There is a difference between eating dinner and intentionally sitting around the table together.
Rest creates space for relationship.
3. Disobedience Keeps Us From Rest
Hebrews repeatedly connects disobedience with missing God's rest.
Disobedience isn't simply making a mistake. The Greek word apeitheia carries the idea of being unpersuadable—refusing to believe or obey God.
Israel didn't enter the Promised Land because they chose unbelief and rebellion.
Moses and Aaron also experienced this. God told Moses to speak to the rock, but he struck it instead.
Adam and Eve did the same thing: God clearly said one thing, and they chose another.
The question is:
Am I trusting God, or am I doing life my own way?
Modern culture says, “My truth. My way.”
Sometimes Christians can even use grace as an excuse for disobedience.
But Hebrews challenges us: disobedience takes us out of God's rest.
We can follow Jesus and still live in constant unrest because we refuse to trust Him in certain areas.
4. God Knows What Is Really Happening
“The word of God is alive and active…”
God's Word gets beneath the surface.
It exposes our thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Two people can say the exact same thing, but God sees the different motives behind it.
People see the outside. God sees the heart.
Nothing is hidden from Him.
Ask yourself:
Where am I being unpersuadable toward God?
Where am I saying, “I know what God says, but I'm going to do it my way anyway?”
5. The Real Purpose of Grace
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence…”
Jesus understands our weaknesses because He experienced temptation and suffering without sinning.
Grace isn't just what gets us to heaven.
Grace also brings the reality of heaven into our lives now.
Jesus gives us grace to say yes to God when everything in us wants to say no.
He has already walked this road and knows exactly what we're facing.
6. Learn From Jesus
Why would we insist on figuring everything out ourselves when Jesus has already gone before us?
Hebrews essentially says: learn from the One who has already done it.
We don't have to learn everything the hard way.
Jesus is the ultimate example and guide.
Big Idea
Faith is trusting God enough to obey Him, and obedience allows us to live in His rest.
God's rest isn't just about stopping.
It's about trusting.
Grace isn't permission to keep doing life our own way.
Grace is the power to do life God's way.
Jesus already walked the road.
Be smart enough to follow the One who has already done it.
